Application Shows Medicaid Impact in Every Pennsylvania County
March 23, 2009

A new feature on the website for the Pennsylvania Association of Managed Care Organizations (PAMCO), www.pamco.org, shows the significant impact Medicaid has on the well-being of people in every one of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties.

The interactive map shows the number of Medicaid recipients in each county, including the number of children, seniors, and citizens with disabilities depending on this program for their basic health care.

“This new mapping application, which lets anyone see just how much this health care program means where they live, reinforces the idea that Medicaid is not just a big city issue in Pennsylvania,” said Michael Rosenstein, spokesman for PAMCO.  “In fact, two-thirds of Pennsylvania Medicaid recipients live outside of Philadelphia and Allegheny counties, and 27 percent live in rural counties.”

Medicaid, also known as Medical Assistance, is the government’s health care program for low income and disabled individuals.  The program serves approximately two million state residents, of whom 46 percent are children under age 18, ten percent are seniors over age 65, and 17 percent are citizens with disabilities.  About 60 percent of the state’s Medicaid recipients are in managed care plans, which studies show provide better quality care and save taxpayers money, compared to traditional state run fee for service plans.
